Australians rejoice in the great beauty of their country, in their sense of freedom and
comradeship, and in the long held traditions of openness, generosity of spirit and
readiness to help one another, particularly in times of crisis. In addition, ever
increasing numbers of Australians are aware of the great cultural legacy of Australia’s
indigenous people.
Indeed, our nation has been developing a living model of harmony for two centuries
and more, as people from many cultures have journeyed from afar to become
Australians. Our nation is grateful for the contributions of its new citizens, for the
creation of a society of extraordinary cultural diversity. This unique diversity is united
beneath one flag.
It is fitting that today we honour and pay allegiance to our Australian flag, which for
over 105 years has been a unifying symbol, a symbol of great national pride. This flag
unites us in times of peace and war, in times of sorrow and celebration.
I extend my warmest greetings to the Australian community as we celebrate Australian
National Flag Day 2006.
