Australian National Flag Day Message

The Australian National Flag is the unifying symbol of our nation that recognises our history, culture and tradition. Our past and our future are woven into our flag.

Wednesday 3 September 2008 marks Australian National Flag Day, recognising the first time the Australian flag was flown on 3 September 1901.  Prime Minister Edmund Barton announced the results of an international competition to select a national flag for the newly created nation of Australia.

The Australian flag is a banner under which Australians celebrate in times of triumph and unite in times of sorrow.

Australia has a rich and vibrant history and all Australians can take pride in our heritage and democratic traditions.

The Australian Flag is the national symbol of our country, our people, our past and our future.

Best wishes
